a beautiful but arrogant princess spurns all suitors and challenges one prince to bring her the singing ringing tree.
the dwarf who owns it gives it to the prince on condition that if the princess doesn't love the him on receipt the prince must return. she doesn't, he does and is turned into a bear.
the princess is punished by the dwarf for her horridness and becomes 'ugly' (ie is given green hair and a putty nose) and will only be beautiful again by doing good deeds. the bear helps her as does a HUGE FISH. that fish was the stuff of my wild mind.
she gets good, pretty, the prince, the end.
