well hello dolly!
a thing for a nice doll

i have a bit of a thing for dolls. it's an ambiguous thing but a thing nonetheless. i only had a few as a girl and never a barbie. instead we had the english equivalent of 'sindy'. i always saw her as a bit of a slone, whereas barbie was more white trash made good. there were also pippas which were smaller, yet the same kind of physique. she was tanned - very seventies; a tanned blonde - and a great deal sexier than barbie could ever hope to be, even vintage barbie. then there was 'patch'. not quite sure what the heck was going on there. she was obviously supposed to be a tom boy, with shirt and slacks rolled up and freckled face a bit smudged. her hair was the thing - a red fright wig. i did love her though.
i also love doll art - those who have taken barbies and their ilk and placed her in a very non-mattel situation. it's endless and enduring. these galleries are an homage to the straight doll and the art doll.
(by the way, also check out the Marilyn Neuhart and Alexander Girard dolls in the design galleries under the section 'It looks fabulous, darling!')

it's a modern classic (46)
these are dolls from this century based on the style of the vintage barbies of the 50s. ie they look as great as the old ones but not as dodgily crappy as they could be - with a charming edge of course. this is how she looks best, i think; that shape of the face and the heavy lids, laden with shadow, the pursed lips. such glamour.
